Harveys team springs into action for Ideal Home Show 2012

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Following the success of last year’s venture, Harveys is returning to the mother of all shopping events, The Ideal Home Show (16 March – 1 April), to sample the deliciously refreshing Harveys over ice with a slice of orange to the crowds of shoppers. Here’s a snapshot of the prep that goes into such events.

We promised to deliver an oasis of calm in the form of a vintage garden stand, the ideal place for visitors to take a Harveys Half Hour away from the hustle and bustle. For weeks it has been a masterpiece in the making, held together by our multitasking guru of an account manager, Holly. From ‘permission to builds’, ice and orange orders and CAD drawings, to an endless parade of health and safety forms, risk assessments and approval processes, it all had to be done and we made it to opening day!

The most important element, the stand design, has been revealed in its fully glory.  Lucky team member Rhiannon escaped the confines of the office and took a trip to a nearby garden centre (who knew central London had them?), to scout for plants and colleagues have been donating garden benches, retro bicycles and all manner of other props.  We are particularly proud of our Pinterest board, on which we nurtured our inner designer and posted images of everything from wheelbarrows to brick-patterned wallpaper to garden gnomes.

So with things in hand, I must admit to having embarked on a one-woman crusade to smuggle an animal of some kind (perhaps a pink flamingo?) into the design plans and onto the stand.  Unfortunately I’ve  been met with disappointing resistance from my teammates; they think animals don’t fit with the theme.  I say, how do animals not fit with the theme? They’ve been around forever, surely they can be deemed vintage?  I admit the flamingo errs on the retro kitsch and offered to compromise with a fox perhaps, or a badger? Just your average garden animal really, I can’t see the harm.  It seems they can.  At the time of going to print (or to blog as it were), it’s all gone quiet on the issue but let’s just say, if there are those among you who agree with me please tweet a picture of your preferred animal to @focuspr and I’ll see what I can do to squirrel it in!

Stay posted for our imminent update on the trials and tribulations of executing a mass sampling campaign to thousands of thirsty shoppers!

Food trends for 2012

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Focus PR has long worked with clients to create amazing events, so we read with interest the new 2012 edition of Square Meal Venues and Events guide. One of the most useful and mouth-watering sections of the guide is the predicted trends in catering for this year.

Not surprisingly in times of financial restraint, ‘Grazing’ and ‘Feast Menus’ feature on the list. Sharing a selection of foods makes much more economic sense and gives a nod to food fashion, allowing guests to share a variety of foods while staying within budget.

‘British Home Cooking’ and ‘Historical Menus’ also make an appearance on the list, suggesting that affection for the familiar is strong and perhaps is another consequence of straightened times. Suet Pudding and inspiration from Delia highlight the sense of national pride in a year that sees a Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics.

Other trends include ‘Meatballs’ and ‘Molecular’ which both became big news in food fashion in 2011, firstly with the wealth of new meatball restaurants popping up around the country, and secondly when Bompas and Parr experimented with drinks and published their Cocktails book, an exploration of crazy concoctions and all-important show-stopping presentation.

Which neatly leads us on to one of the more quirky predictions, for ‘Unusual Receptacles’. Cocktails from teacups, punch from a gramophone and a plate made of Lego are some of the ideas that have already come to fruition.

We’re working on our very own event extravaganza for a client later this year so watch this space to see what we can concoct!

The opening of Harveys Cellars, the home of Harveys Bristol Cream

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

We recently accompanied several journalists to the VIP opening of Harveys Cellars, a new sherry and cocktail lounge in the historic city of Bristol.  The original home of Harveys Bristol Cream, the new bar has a museum in the cellars dedicated to the UK’s favourite sherry and filled with original artefacts from the brand’s history as well as the bodega in Jerez – a real treat for anyone with a passion for sherry, Bristol or heritage brands.

The trip began with a sail along the docks on the splendid Matthew, a replica of the historic ship which sailed over 500 years ago. We boarded at the Arnolfini Quay where we were greeted with a glass of Harveys signature serve: Harveys Bristol Cream served over ice with a slice of orange (in this case, a flaming orange to release even more orange flavour into the velvety drink). Despite the wintry chill, we were able to recreate the final stage of the historic journey where Harveys Bristol Cream was first imported from Europe to Bristol in the late 18th Century.

We arrived at the old Bristol port and walked the short distance to the Harveys Cellars at 12 Denmark Street. After descending down the steps into the building, the very first thing we saw was the striking wall of Harveys Bristol Cream bottle bases, made from iconic Bristol Blue glass. Steeped in heritage, the Cellars combine the authentic exposed brickwork, old Harveys advertisements and traditional sherry barrels with modern white walls, wooden floors and stylish bars.

After exploring the Cellars, we tasted one of the tapas flight meals available from the menu. We started with a crisp, dry Harveys Fino paired with salty almonds and olives, followed  by Harveys VORS Palo Cortado enjoyed with salty cod croquets, chorizo &  morcilla (a sort of Spanish black pudding) and Spanish cheeses as well as quince jelly served with fig & almond cake. To finish the meal, we were served Harveys Pedro Ximenéz, a treacly sweet dessert wine paired with a chunky chocolate brownie and traditional sherry trifle. Despite having gorged on the delicious treats on offer we couldn’t resist squeezing in a cheeky cocktail (mine was a delicious and very sweet candyfloss martini).

There may be plenty of sherry and tapas bars in London but there’s only one bar in the world which is dedicated to Harveys sherry and we would definitely recommend a visit!
