Generation Y, Millennials, The Net Generation. However you refer to this group of people, they represent a new(ish) cohort of recruits who have a fresh outlook on their careers.
Fading is the popularity of a linear career where graduates will happily commit to one career path and set out to follow a traditional promotional ladder in line with everyone else because ‘it’s the way it is’. It seems that graduates in particular are not necessarily satisfied with this idea and are taking control of their careers. They want assurance that their employer will champion their professional and personal development and help them to grow and explore the areas they are interested in so they can shape their own future vertically and laterally. They want a flexible, nurturing environment.
While some employers might be worried about the risks involved in investing in their people – they don’t want to be grooming them for their next move – we like to take a different, more positive approach. The development of our people is something we’re really proud of. With weekly internal and external training, six-monthly personal development plans and annual 360° appraisals, well-deserved promotions, and an emerging mentoring scheme, we embrace development wholeheartedly. We have continued to champion training when other companies have allowed the recession to cut it.
Not only do we encourage people to move upwards, we recognise that, particularly at the beginning of your career, you may be reluctant to ‘pigeon hole’ yourself into one type of PR; our matrix structure encourages our team to work across different categories, remain challenged, explore areas of interest, and work with a wide range of talented individuals.
We also try to nurture those diverse areas of strength, specialism, and interest which make each person individual. So, if someone has a love of social media, we’ll explore ways in which we can invest and help them grow their knowledge and experience in this area. If they have a passion for food and drink, we’ll try our best to provide the opportunity to work with chefs or mixologists on their favourite brands.
Our people are precious and we wouldn’t be successful without them. If this all sounds like something you’d like the opportunity to be part of, we’re always on the lookout for bright, enthusiastic, hungry people who’d like to make their mark and progress within our meritocratic working environment, so please send your CV to adrienne@focuspr.co.uk.
