Courvoisier at the Coming Up festival

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

What would one eat in a post-apocalyptic feast? This was the very question Eat Your Heart Out posed to a hungry and intrigued audience at the weekend.

Eat Your Heart Out took place in the mysterious vaults of Debut, London and was one of the events which made up the Coming Up Festival, produced in collaboration with Old Vic New Voices and Ideas Tap. Set on and around a banquet table seating 130 people, my senses were tantalised throughout this unconventional performance, led by creative director and starring aide for the evening, Nina Smith. Blanch & Shock were the creative minds behind the cleverly designed food menu which consisted of ‘asteroid ash’ and edible pansies. An audience member was carefully selected to assist in the making of the main course, led away and then subsequently ‘served up’ in the form of a beef stew…audience participation to say the least!

The event rounded off with a mug of Courvoisier punch which I raised to the creative minds involved for putting on such an eccentric event, some of whom we are proud to say are members of Courvoisier The Future 500 – a network for revolutionary individuals.

I think it’s fair to say that this had been one dining experience I shall never forget.  Coming Up Festival runs until 4 March, to find out more visit www.ideastap.com/comingup.

Inspirations from childhood

Monday, November 29th, 2010

If I had to choose something that I simply HAD to do before I’m (ahem) 40, then spending an evening up close and personal with some of Britain’s best-loved and acclaimed actors would definitely make the list.  So, you can imagine my utter delight to receive an invitation to just that at the Almeida Theatre, London, on an extraordinarily cold Sunday evening, courtesy of sponsor Courvoisier.  Entitled An Evening With the Stars and a fundraising event in support of the magnificent charity Friendship Works, the evening was hosted by the inimitable, charming Tim Pigott-Smith, the charity’s patron, and supported by cultural zeitgeist magazine Open, edited by Loma-Ann Marks (CVTF500 member).

As I arrived at the intimate Almeida theatre I could feel the excited anticipation of the theatre-goers, helped along their way with a glass or two of tasty Courvoisier-infused punch . At 7pm sharp, we took our places in the auditorium and for the next two hours were taken on the most magical journey as A-lister after A-lister entertained us with the passages, poems and music that had inspired them as children.  My own personal highlights were Sir Ian McKellan’s reading from his favourite childhood book (just to see the man in the flesh would have been enough for me, but that voice ….), Richard Stilgoe’s incorrigibly comic turn on the piano including a song made up on the spot from lyrics tossed at him by the audience and Dame Eileen Atkin’s wonderful rendition of Just William and the Just So stories. Dan Stevens, Kate Fahy, Helena Kennedy QC, Pamela Miles, Bill Paterson and Kevin Spacey were pretty damn fine too.  After the theatre performance, we were whisked off to a delicious gala dinner at the nearby Almeida restaurant where Jon Snow led the charge with a brilliant charity auction.  Each and every one of the actors involved takes an active role in Friendship Works and through their touching performances inspired many in the audience to do the same.  I would urge you to take a look too!

Brand collaboration made in foodie heaven?

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Interesting people, energising conversation and great food are probably three of my greatest loves in life, all often facilitated by my job – lucky me!  Last week, I took a trip to the brand new Dumplings Legend, launched by entrepreneur Geoffrey Leong, a man singlehandedly injecting some modernism into Chinatown without compromising ANY of the slavish dedication to food for which this country is known.  The purpose of my visit – other than to sample the restaurant’s culinary delights – was to discuss an exciting collaboration between revolutionary cognac brand Courvoisier and Dumplings Legend to celebrate Chinese New Year 2011.  The result?  One of the best lunches I have had in a long time.

People don’t get much more interesting than Geoffrey, a man so full of creativity, enthusiasm and a desire to spread the word on just how great Asian food should be, that you come away wanting to eulogise too!  The conversation literally crackled with ideas, some weird and some wonderful, and the food was sublime. These dumplings really are legendary and shouldn’t be missed.  And who knows?  Perhaps February 2011 will bring the visitors to Chinatown a Couvoisier-infused dim sum or two!
