Cider hit by Budget tax hike

Cider under threat?

The power of Facebook has come into its own again following Darling’s Budget which imposed a tax duty increase of 10% above inflation on stronger ciders from Sunday. By 8am today (26 March) 30,000 people had joined the Leave Our Cider Alone Facebook group to protest because the stronger cider is generally the locally-sourced stuff, not the big brands which are highly visible in the on- and off-trade. There’s a great piece in The Independent on the subject, which is worth reading too.

Even though I rarely drink cider I have joined the group, and I urge others to do the same, because this proposal has the potential to cripple one of England’s oldest, traditional industries. Join the group and sign the Downing Street petition today!
