World of Welsh Lamb goes out on a high

City workers tuck into Andre Garrett's signature Welsh Lamb dish at Leadenhall Market

Every Wednesday for the last six weeks we’ve been serving up an assortment of devilishly delectable Welsh lamb dishes in Leadenhall Market in London, as part of our World of Welsh Lamb celebrations.  In total we handed out 3,400 samples to busy City workers at lunchtime, with the aim of encouraging them to think about eating Welsh lamb weekly and inspiring them with the meat’s versatility and incredible quality. We worked with six renowned London chefs – one a week – to serve mouth-watering morsels to the hungry hoards, whose numbers increased each week as word spread about the promotion.

Those who liked what they tasted and wanted more could purchase the entire meal from The Butcher at Ledenhall Market, and over 150 people did!   We also gave out Welsh lamb recipe leaflets and oven gloves to encourage consumers to get cooking in their own kitchens.

Our chefs were:

  • Andre Garrett from Galvin at Windows, who fired up the locals by cooking slow-grilled rump of Welsh lamb, coco beans with escargot butter and certainly gave them all a taste of things to come!
  •  Joe Gray from Kenza cooked a Moroccan-inspired dish, Muhammah, full of couscous with a sweet garnish of figs and apricots. This proved to be a definite crowd-pleaser and looked a perfect platter as a full meal in a terracotta dish
  • TV chef Sophie Wright cooked up a storm with marinated canon of Welsh lamb with flagoulet beans and merguez sausage ragu
  • Anthony Demetre, co-owner of Arbutus, Wild Honey and now Les Deux Salon took to the stage, or plate, on Wednesday 6 October with slow-cooked shoulder of Welsh lamb with fresh white coco beans that melted in the mouth
  • Francesco Mazzei’s showcased intense flavours in his Italian creation of rack of Welsh lamb on a quinoa bed with salmoriglio sauce
  • The final week saw Cyrus Todiwala from Café Spice Namasté delight his audience with his Welsh lamb kharu gos curry, which had the perfect amount of ‘kick’

Much more information and all the chefs’ recipes from the six weeks can be found online at www.eatwelshlamb.co.uk and you can also see a film of the activity.

Andre Garrett kicks off World of Welsh Lamb event

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

I’ve just got back from the first of our events celebrating the start of the Welsh lamb season.  Today saw Michelin-starred Andre Garrett, head chef at Galvin at Windows, cooking up slow-grilled rump of Welsh Lamb, coco beans, courgettes and escargot butter for consumers passing through Leadenhall Market in the City.  We gave away over 500 free samples and sold out of the full-size portions too, so clearly it was a big hit!  Check out the video here.

If you fancy making the recipe at home, visit the Welsh lamb website to download it, and make sure you make your way to Leadenhall Market next Wednesday, when we’ll have Joe Gray of Kenza cooking his delicious Morrocan take on Welsh Lamb.

A World of Welsh Lamb is gearing up for its launch on 8 September and last Friday saw the photo call bring together some of the top chefs who will be cooking up mouth-watering Welsh Lamb dishes for the public to sample free of charge. Francesco Mazzei, Cyrus Todiwala, Andre Garrett, Sophie Wright and Joe Gray posed in front of The Butcher in Leadenhall Market, a City of London Market which originally dates back to the fourteenth century.

All the chefs dutifully posed, dispelling any myths of rivalry within the catering industry. Bringing their expertise to the grill at Leadenhall Market, these chefs are some of the top names in the business. Sophie Wright was one of the youngest head chefs in the country, taking control of the kitchen at Beach Blanket Babylon in London at the age of 20. Andre Garrett is Head Chef at Galvin at Windows and in 2002 won the Roux Scholarship. Francesco Mazzei and Cyrus Todiwala both run their own restaurants in London to critical acclaim whilst Joe Gray works with Kenza, the acclaimed Lebanese and Moroccan restaurant based in the heart of the City.

After a few flashes of the camera the chefs headed back to their kitchens and The Butcher fired up the grill for another lunch service for hungry City workers.
