Focus PR takes Maker’s + the Machine to Birmingham

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Last week Focus PR’s Maker’s Mark team hit the streets of Birmingham to give the midlands a taste of premium bourbon whisky in the shape of the very unique Maker’s + the Machine. For three days the Maker’s Mark bespoke vending machine was positioned at various locations in the heart of Birmingham city centre including Brindleyplace, with the hidden bartender giving onlookers quite a surprise.

The team distributed over 1,000 carefully hand-crafted drinks including Maker’s on the Rocks, Maker’s and Ginger and the hugely popular Kentucky Champagne. Despite the rain,  the Birmingham crowds broke all previous records, with our team giving out drinks to more people than at any of the previous outings of Maker’s + the Machine, all eager to taste the smooth, luxurious flavour.

Some were so impressed they were compelled to go out and buy a bottle straight after tasting and, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, one local even bought a bottle online there and then, after enjoying his taster so much.

Delivering ROI on PR spend

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

As far as possible, we try to measure the effectiveness of our client campaigns from a hard commercial perspective, rather than just measuring the column inches.  While media coverage is a useful yardstick when analysed intelligently, ultimately our existence is justified by the value we deliver to clients, not the height of the pile of press clippings.  So, how did we measure up in 2010?

For Courvoisier, our brief is to build awareness and interest (and, ultimately, sales) among 28-35 year old ‘new adult’ males.  Working with the client and its other agencies, we focused on supporting the brand’s new positioning of ‘a revolutionary spirit’, developing appropriate events and media angles.  The result was not only a significant shift in consumer perceptions of the brand (from ‘stuffy’ and ‘outdated’ to ‘cool’, ‘experimental’, ‘brave, ‘surprising’ and ‘edgy’), but also a 24% increase in sales value in a flat market (source: Nielsen, year to January 22, 2011).

Maxxium UK stable mate Maker’s Mark also put in a stellar performance last year, with sales growing at 74% (versus an ambitious target of 50%) and brand awareness increasing by three percentage points to 20%.  It was particularly gratifying to see that our Maker’s + The Machine sampling and consumer engagement programme delivered a return on investment twenty times greater than that of the advertising campaign which ran at the same time.

Eileen Livingston, marketing controller at Maxxium made us blush when she said, “Focus PR are truly refreshing as a PR agency – they really understand the brands and work with passion and infectious energy to deliver great results! Focus PR are committed to doing their very best for your brand and they really just get ‘it’ – they know the pressures on return on investment and the challenge in standing out in a world of communication clutter and they succeed in driving the return on investment, brand standout and talkability amazingly well!”

Maker’s + The Machine cocktail tour continues

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

The Maker’s Mark team were out in force last Friday in the heart of London’s Shoreditch with Maker’s + The Machine, the world’s most surprising bespoke vending machine. The Machine served 320 Maker’s Mark drinks to Londoners giving an unexpected boost to their Friday. Serving a selection of three drinks, Kentucky Champagne (Maker’s Mark and Appletiser), a tangy Maker’s & Ginger (Maker’s Mark and ginger ale) and a classic Maker’s on the Rocks, our hidden bartender surprised more than a few passers-by with the cocktails, which are as handcrafted as the bourbon itself.

Next in store for the Machine is a national tour, so if you want to visit Maker’s + The Machine for yourself make sure you’re in the right place at the right time:
