I joined the Pernod Ricard Travel Retail team a few months back and had heard many stories about glamorous press trips to The Palace of Versailles and Pierre Cardinâs personal abode as well as fancy collaborations with famous designers and celebrities. So, I was very excited to be asked to accompany a group of travel retail journalists to the launch of the most luxurious and ornate bottle of whisky I have ever come across, a legacy of iconic luxury from Christian Lacroix.Â
Born from a striking collaboration between Chivas Brothers and the French fashion house, Chivas Regal 18 Year Old by Christian Lacroix is a beautiful blue, bejewelled bottle with intricate laser metallisation and hand-woven damask and embroideries, packaged in a mirrored treasure box echoing the multi-layered richness of the whisky inside.Â
Having spent the last few months liaising with this new sector of media via telephone and email, it was great to finally meet the lovely Nicole, Colin, Marek and John at the renowned Quo Vadis in Soho, for the unveiling of this prestigious bottle. Over a delicious three-course meal and a dram of Chivas Regal 18 Year Old, we discussed the importance of limited edition projects within travel retail and the significance of such high-profile collaborations, as well as such high-brow topics as the merits of English vs. American football, how to raise bilingual children and the season finale of Lost â all in a day’s work! Â
With TFWA Cannes just around the corner, Iâm now looking forward to more hob-nobbing with the media in glamorous venues and getting fully immersed in the small but very friendly and inclusive world of travel retail.

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010One of the perks of working with global clients is that we occasionally get an invitation to visit some far-flung destination whilst accompanying a journalist or two. So imagine the excitement when Martell announced they wanted little old me to take some journalists out to Hong Kong to witness the unveiling of a new visual identity and a stand-alone boutique at the Hong Kong International Airport.
The decadent and luxurious boutique has been designed to reinforce the brandâs heritage and premium credentials and will allow all Martell promotions to be instantly recognisable by travellers and shoppers. The focal point of the boutique is the âDiscovery Tableâ where customers can learn more about the brandâs history and production methods.  There was a ribbon-cutting ceremony with no fewer than eight people taking part including Patrick Ricard, Lionel Breton (chairman & CEO, Martell Mumm Perrier-Jouët) and Thibaut de Poutier (managing director, Pernod Ricard Asia Duty Free).  Melody Ng of The Moodie Report was one of the first to write up her experience of the opening.Â
After the opening ceremony we were invited to an amazing dinner in Hullett House, formerly the Marine Police Headquarters and one of Hong Kongâs old colonial buildings. Pre-dinner Martell cocktails were served (the Martell Strawberry was my favourite) and then we had a delicious French-inspired five course meal, each course paired with Martellâs finest blends.Â
Makes a sandwich at my desk feel more than a little mundane!
